THE POEM

Atlantis, the Utopia that was lost,

More valuable than its cost.

A land that was built for not only real kings,

As is the same with Iroquois Springs.

It is also a place of beauty that we call our own,

The only other place that we would call home.

Stories of Atlantis are still told,

As will the stories of Blue and Gold.

The mere sight of colors trigger the mind,

The colors blue and gold will last all of time.

The spirit of blue shall never fail,

And the spirit of camp is in us all.

For when the four days of competition end,

We shall all be reunited as friends.

During these four days it is a friendly fight,

Each team putting forth all of their might.

The blue will fight with only a cheer,

And then our team’s true might will appear.

The paint on our skin is a symbol of pride,

And the paint brush, dripping blue, has never dried.

So what does the future hold?

For Atlantis Blue and Midas Gold?

Where did the time go, why won’t it last?

It is now only a thing in the past.

The love we share with Midas Gold is one that is never old;

Even after camp ends and we’re all in the cold.

And although camp is about to end,

We know we’ll all be together again.

THE ESSAY

Welcome one, welcome all to the magnificent land of Atlantis. I am Poseidon, God of the Seas and I’d like to take you back in history to look at Atlantis in all of its former glory.

Atlantis was simply the most (and I mean the MOST) beautiful wonder to behold in the entire historical world. The finest teachings brought knowledge to the people of Atlantis and the finest marble of black, red and white surrounded the people of this surreal utopia. Hard work and dignity were shown throughout this marvelous civilization. My ten sons, including Atlas (my firstborn), set the highest standard for all of the Atlanteans and the rest of the world. They created and established the first human concepts of life as we know it. Reading, writing, mathematics, architecture and agriculture are just a few of their impressive accomplishments.

However, shortly after reaching the height of their achievement, the Atlanteans became out of touch with their surroundings and too proud with their power. Instead of using their hard work to keep up with the high status of Atlantis, they began to focus their energy on imperializing and expanding into new territories.

When Atlantis embarked on a quest to spread their enormous influence over Athens, they were finally defeated. That got me mad! Yes, I was furious! I spoke to my fellow Gods and I sent for total destruction of Atlantis. Now, of course, I can see that drowning the entire city was harsh and cruel, and to this day I regret my actions tremendously.

But now it’s time to move on and look to the present, I first want to say that I was so elated and overwhelmed with pride when the news reached me that Atlantis was being formed once again in Rock Hill, New York. I’m pleased to see the lost city is being reincarnated and engaging in friendly competition, finally learning from their past arrogance. Following the example of the original Atlanteans’ positive characteristics, Atlantis Blue has brought leadership, determination and power to the 2007 Color Week. I can see my ten sons’ legacy in the Blue Teams’ Field Marshals – all of them leading with spirit, joy and happiness. I am also pleased with the judges for building a strong foundation upon with Atlantis Blue and Midas Gold can compete and meet again.

Speaking of Midas! I am very honored to be reunited with my old companion. Even though Midas Gold has been competing hard with Atlantis Blue, good sportsmanship has always been shown. It is apparent that both teams possess the qualities that once made their namesakes great!

I am truly satisfied that Atlantis has come back to life the way it did. I know that through the family here at Iroquois Springs, Atlantis will never be forgotten.

Good luck to Midas Gold and of course Atlantis Blue on this great night in history! I will forever be looking down on all of you!
