THE POEM

At his peaceful shelter
The Ibis waits prepared to fly
Expanding his wings
Below an endless azure sky

As pearly soft clouds
Turn to an ominous gray
The Ibis bravely watches
His winged rivals glide away

Although the Ibis is brave
He’s also very clever
Soars out of dangers way
Avoiding stormy weather

After the perils have gone
And the clouds have all descended
The Ibis, first to return
Now that the tempest has ended

He flies with strength and might
Agility and grace
Gliding with content
Back to his rightful place.

THE ESSAY

“Ibis Blue: A Legend”

It was a cold and humid night when the first wave of fright swept over the passengers of the S.S. Sequoian Blue. “Help me,” shouted Samantha, a young passenger, on her way to Camp Sequoia. However, her futile cries could not be heard over the roaring of the winds above, for an impending hurricane threatened to cast the entire ship into the abyss of the Atlantic Ocean. From their departure, the crew had used the bright Eastern Nebula to guide them to their sleep-away camp. But now the once powerful golden constellation was hidden amongst the angry clouds above; its brilliant rays no longer shone down. Instead, unforgiving darkness cloaked the beacon from the desperate passengers.

As the last drop of hope evaporated from their hearts, a distant ‘ka-kaw” echoed through the dark air, bringing with it a feeble stream of hope. Was it possible that anything could withstand the wrath of Hurricane Bubba? It was just then that a cry of great joy was heard from the lookout post of the ship. “It’s an Ibis,’ screamed Mark, “It’s a sign of great courage and strength and it has come to guide us back to safety.” The presence of the bird suggested that land was near.

From the sighting, the Ibis led them safely back to land, guiding them though one of the most fearsome hurricanes known to mankind. If not for the mighty knowledge and speed of the Ibis, the campers would have been lost amongst the debris and destruction of the storm.

The Ibis is a bird known for its great courage and strength because it is the last bird to leave during a hurricane and the first to return home again. Further, it has the knowledge and speed to determine when it should flee. Our team, like this Ibis, is the last to give up in a struggle against our foes and will always return to our true home, Iroquois Springs. Through this Color Week, we have performed in keeping with the legacy of the stoic Ibis and the S.S. Blue, demonstrating great courage and strength.

Nebula, a luminous cluster of stars, can easily fade away from sight, but an Ibis will be forever visible, always part of the earth. And as such, the blue team will reign forever victorious over gold in this year’s Color Week 2004!

THE ALMA MATER

(Tune – Unknown – If you know it, please get in touch!)

As they dance lightly upon our hearts
These memories of our adolescence
Drawing us together whenever we’re apart
Manifested during summer’s bright presence

Chorus:
Reminiscing of times I laughed and cried
But although, although blue and gold will separate
We will return
Eternally bonded by times shared together
Our friendships, like flowers, have grown
And you put the love in my heart
You put the smile on my face

Chorus:
Reminiscing of times I laughed and cried
But although, although blue and gold will separate
We will return
Peering from the shadows, the memories return
Fills my heart with glowing light
You’ll hold a special place
But we will grow and we will change
And try to adapt to all the challenges
They say time should be cherished every day
Cause its time that has taken my tomorrows
And turned them into yesterdays

GIRLS: And it’s you that have taken my yesterdays, and turned them into memories
BOYS: The memories keep us coming back each summer to the sheltering wings
ALL: It’s the sheltering wings that ascend each summer, spreading across Iroquois Springs.

Chorus:
Reminiscing of times I laughed and cried
But although, although blue and gold will separate We will return

ALL: We will, return
GIRLS: We will, return
BOYS: We will, return
ALL: Next year
