THE ESSAY

By Kathryn Evans, Jamie Lerner, Abigail Saltzman, Noah Sosnick, and Emily Yankowitz
Ten years of excellence, ten years of strength, and ten years of camaraderie. Over the ten years of Iroquois Springs, these words have described ten Blue Color Week teams. Achaean Blue is no exception, but rather the epitome of these attributes. The Achaeans were exemplary warriors, using their combined strength in a relentless ten-year battle over the city of Troy. In the footsteps of our forefathers, we have battled the last four days, using our combined strength against Golden Frontier.
The most famous instance of the Achaean warriors’ cunning was the use of the Trojan Horse. The Achaeans, giving the illusion of surrender sent a large wooden horse to the gates of Troy. Little did the Trojans know that inside the horse were thirty-one of the most skilled members of the Achaean army, just as we have thirty-one of our teammates leading Achaean Blue. That night, as darkness crept across the blue skies, the Trojans’ joy at their apparent victory quickly changed to fright. The Achaeans jumped out of the horse and began to attack Troy. Before the Trojans had a chance to react, the battle was over. The Achaeans’ superior skill and planning allowed them to prevail and capture Troy. The ancient Achaeans persevered, and so too will our team in Color Week 2010.
Blue and Gold have been competing for dominance of Color Week over the ten years of Iroquois Springs, just as the Achaeans used their strength, excellence, and strategy in the ten year Trojan War. The Greeks fought shoulder to shoulder similar to how we now sing arm in arm. Epius, an Achaean warrior, crafted and designed the Trojan Horse that led the Achaeans to victory. Similarly, our campers have created the artwork presented tonight that will allow us to become the dominant team. Our swords are laid down, as our plaque is raised up to become part of Iroquois Springs’ tradition. Our story will be told in future years and become part of legend. It will become written in Iroquois Springs’ lore, just as Homer’s epic tales are revered around the world today. Thus, history will repeat itself when the Achaeans win this year of 2010, just as they did in 1184 B.C.
The Achaean warrior’s excellence, strength, and camaraderie have served as a template for our team to follow. Through this model, our team has grown as strong as the ancient warriors of the legendary Trojan Horse. Our ultimate goal this Color Week is to conquer our Troy: Golden Frontier. Tonight we will follow in the footsteps of our Achaean ancestors and fulfill our namesake by defeating Golden Frontier.
We wish good luck to the Gold team and LET’S GO BLUE!

THE POEM

By Emily Hein, Melissa Levine, and Sami Ulin
Intimidation, the smell of fear,
Voices roaring, what is this you hear?
Blue.
In the treacherous battle,
The Trojans thought they would conquer it all,
After ten years, they would discover the
Achaeans would lead them to a brutal fall.
We are ready for a similar war here,
Against the enemy: Golden Frontier.
In the tenth year of competition between blue and gold,
Victory is what blue will hold.
We’ll fight to the finish; we cannot be stopped,
Even history ensures the Achaeans will end up on top.
With what blue team has to offer, gold cannot compete,
As for spirit, stamina, and strength, the Golden Frontier will be beat.
The golden sun falls at the end of the day,
But the blue sky remains high to stay.
Like a blue current crashing on the golden sand,
We will flood the frontier land.

THE MARCH

Tune: “Our Time Now” by Plain White T’s

Blue Team’s here with all our might
There’s no chance of losing,
Nothing’s gonna stop us now
We will defeat you!

It’s the Blue team versus Gold
We’ll be dominating,
First place is where we belong
There’s no competition!

This color week is ours tonight,
Gold thinks they have a chance to fight,
Achaean Blue will take you down!
Blue is the name you will remember,
Victory is ours forever,
Achaean Blue will take you down,
We’ll take you down!

At the track and in the pool
We will watch Gold suffer,
Scoring points across the board
We’ll always beat you!

The Trojan War was ours back then
“Winner” is our title,
Better than we were before
Our soldiers are stronger!

This color week is ours tonight,
Gold thinks they have a chance to fight,
Achaean Blue will take you down!
Blue is the name you will remember,
Victory is ours forever,
Achaean Blue will take you down,
We’ll take you down!

GO BLUE!!!

THE ALMA MATER

Tune: “Still Fighting It” by Ben Folds
The days have passed,
The end is near,
The summer’s over but our hearts remain here.
The sun has set,
I hold you tight,
And our memories keep us warm, tonight.
And we wish forever we could stay,
Wish we could relive, those days.
The sun will rise again
And lead us back home,
The light of blue and gold
Shines through when we’re alone,
Awaiting our return
The seasons fade
I’ll always remember
You’ve left me forever changed
(Duet)
What, I’d give
For one, more day.
The months pass by
When we’re apart,
A piece is missing until summer starts,
But we know
Where we belong,
Iroquois Springs, has kept us strong,
Time stopped while we were away,
But now we can relive, those days.
The sun will rise again
And lead us back home,
The light of blue and gold
Shines through when we’re alone,
Awaiting our return
The seasons fade
I’ll always remember
You’ve left me forever changed
(Duet)
What, I’d give
For one, more day
With you.
The years will pass
The tears will dry,
We have changed
Though our home has stayed the same,
We’ll always treasure our days, here.
(Chorus)
The sun will rise again
And lead us back home,
The light of blue and gold
Shines through when we’re alone,
Awaiting our return
The seasons fade
