THE POEM

The utopia of Arcadia
The golden sun shines through the shade of the trees
The splendor of the forest is made
As the sun rises upon a lush meadow
The God of the wild commences dancing
And begins to look around the uncivilized land
Oh! How the birds sing
Look to where the shepherds tend these flocks
Their simplicity shields them
From the world
Their minds are unspoiled gems

Suddenly there is silence
The simple laughter has ceased
What has happened to the harmony
What has happened to the peace
The towns are deserted
The forest is in ruins
But there is still hope
Our savior will come soon
Golden Arcadia will not be defeated
Yes, we will be victorious
Our utopia shall be rebuilt
Sapphire Blue will not defeat us

Iroquois Springs
Split in two for war
Battle of the blue and gold
Although the Sapphire shines bright
Gold will come out on top once more

Arcadia is paradise
Will win tonight
Our home
Iroquois Springs
Will come together again
With friendship it shall bring

It’s why we return
Year after year
It’s our utopia
It continues to bring us near
Iroquois Springs is our Arcadia.

THE ESSAY

The term Arcadia originates from an ancient Greek province. However, its meaning has evolved and the name is now synonymous with a vision of utopia and untouched natural beauty. Arcadia is uncorrupted by outside forces and represents the ideal of the simplistic Golden Age of antiquity. It is representative of a paradise full of not only natural wonder but also a virtuous, tightly-knit citizenry. While the concept of Arcadia seems both unrealistic and unattainable, we have found solace in our time at Iroquois Springs. This camp that has become a home for so many is Arcadian at its core. Iroquois Springs provides an escape from the complexity and artificiality of the ‘real” world. Camp is designed to be separate from the problems and pressures that people normally face. This separation allows people to experience the legendary Arcadia for themselves. By being especially close to nature and far from society, Iroquois Springs represents a true paradise. The traditions of camp that have prevailed for so many years allow this haven of simplicity and nature to be unyielding.

While natural beauty and simplicity contribute to the utopian state of Arcadia, the people at Iroquois Springs create this paradise. The selflessness and compassion of each person allows campers to live unconstrained by the obstacles of the world and experience a carefree Arcadia. Our team has innate strength stemming from the utopia Iroquois Springs provides. While our team is an ideal utopia in itself, the Arcadia represents and unifies both the blue and gold teams.
