The Countdown to 2020 is On

The countdown to 2020 is on.  In less than a week we will be ringing in the New Year and eagerly looking forward to the 20th summer at camp Iroquois Springs. It’s a celebration of 20 in 20!  Twenty summers of watching campers grow to become more confident, resilient, independent, and empathic individuals.  Twenty summers of living and learning together through teamwork, leadership, and meaningful friendships.

Since our very first summer, back in 2001, we have seen exciting changes in programming, enjoyed many wonderful facility improvements, and have even had the privilege of hiring counselors who were former IS campers. A lot of changes have taken place over the last 19 years, but one thing remains the same, and that is the philosophy and spirit of camp.  Year after year, campers and staff can always count on camp being a place of memorable traditions, taking healthy risks, showing kindness, building confidence, and creating a sense of belonging.  Through the years, campers and staff have always been able to count on their camp family for support and encouragement to accomplish great things.  We are all so very lucky to have camp and the people we call our lifetime friends.

Though summer 2020 is months away, that doesn’t mean we can’t bring the great energy of camp to us right now.  We can use the New Year as an opportunity to set goals and bring some of the best parts of camp to our everyday lives.  The New Year gives us a fresh start, and is typically a time for reflection and goal setting. Setting goals, not necessarily resolutions (because they tend to last only until mid-January), can keep us motivated, focused, and empower us to change a behavior or work on a new skill.

What if we set goals this January that are consistent with what camp offers us every summer?  Goals that continue to give us what camp does, friendship and a sense of belonging, a bit more kindness, healthy living, being present, confidence, a willingness to try new things, and perseverance.  Here are some goals that can bring camp to us all year long!

  • Spend more time in the great outdoors.
  • Get moving.
  • Become a better friend.
  • Spend time doing what you love.
  • Set aside time to unplug each and every day.
  • Learn a new skill.
  • Volunteer to help those in need.
  • Step outside of your comfort zone and take a healthy risk.

Whatever it is that you choose to work on for the New Year, we know you will bring that same spirit and motivation to camp life.  The Iroquois Springs family is truly an exceptional group of young people who will continue to do great things in and outside of camp.  Wishing everyone the happiest holiday season and all the best for a peaceful and healthy New Year.  Let the countdown to the New Year, and to 20 in 20, begin!!!
