Teamwork
Teamwork is an important component of the camp experience. Every day, campers join together in a variety of activities and events, working cooperatively towards a common goal. Teamwork is a highly social activity and gives campers a sense of belonging. As campers interact and exchange ideas, they develop better communication skills, learn to respect others abilities, and improve self-confidence. According to the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, children who participate in teamwork develop a greater sense of social competency because they learn to correctly interpret and respond to their peers’ needs. A beneficial skill, especially in our plugged-in world.
A typical day at camp encourages teamwork in a natural setting. Campers participating on a sports team, practicing for the talent show, making movies at digital media, or going to outdoor adventure, all work together to complete a project or accomplish a goal. Campers have fun working together while building character, developing friendships, improving communication skills, and belonging to a group.
Color War is a great example of campers working together for a common purpose. During Color War, teams participate in a variety of exciting events, working toward a Blue and Gold victory. It’s a friendly and spirited competition, and shows just how amazing a group can work together, with encouragement, support and good sportsmanship. Events like the Apache Relay race and Sing bring the entire camp together, where every team member has a part and all are celebrated for their contribution, showing the true mea
ning of teamwork.
Teamwork skills learned at camp can be brought to the classroom, the sports field, student council and all future board rooms. Campers have an advantage of knowing how to share ideas, listen to different opinions, work through conflicts, and come together to accomplish a goal. So, find what you love to do, join a team and have fun working together toward a common goal.
